Bees and wasps need different handling. Honey bees that have built comb in a wall, roof, or meter box usually need removal of the bees and the comb, often by a provider that can relocate live bees. A swarm resting on a branch is often temporary and may leave on its own within a day or two. Yellowjackets and paper wasps are usually treated or removed by a pest control company. In every case, keep people and pets away and don't try to remove an active colony yourself.

Safety first

  • Keep children and pets indoors and away from the area. Don't spray, hose, throw things at, or block the entrance of a hive.
  • If someone is stung many times, or has trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness after a sting, call 911.
  • Honey bees in Southern California can be defensive, and Africanized honey bees are present in much of the region. Treat any colony with caution, especially near lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and other vibration.
  • If you are stung and bees are chasing you, move away quickly to a building or car. Don't jump into water.

Swarm or established hive?

A swarm is a cluster of bees hanging on a branch, fence, or wall with no comb. They are looking for a new home and are often less defensive while clustered. Many swarms leave on their own, but some move into walls, attics, or water meter boxes. An established hive has comb, often hidden inside a wall, eave, chimney, or utility box, with bees flying steadily in and out of one opening. Established hives don't leave on their own.

Why does the comb have to come out?

If bees in a wall are killed and the comb is left behind, honey and wax can melt, drip, stain drywall, and attract ants, rodents, and new swarms. A proper removal opens the area, removes the comb and honey, cleans it, and seals the entry so new bees don't move in. Ask whether the provider does the repair or whether you will need a separate contractor; repair work may need a contractor's license (check at cslb.ca.gov).

Live removal and relocation

Many people want honey bees saved when possible. Some providers and beekeepers remove and relocate live colonies, especially swarms and colonies that can be reached without major demolition. Whether that is possible depends on the colony's location, temperament, and access. Ask the provider what they plan to do with the bees.

Yellowjackets and paper wasps

  • Yellowjackets often nest in the ground, in walls, or in voids, and can be aggressive around food and when the nest is disturbed. Ground nests near paths and play areas are a common call in late summer.
  • Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, railings, and patio covers. They are less aggressive unless the nest is disturbed.

Pest control companies usually treat these nests directly and remove reachable nests afterward. Treatments are often done in the evening when insects are less active.

How can I help prevent repeat colonies?

  1. Seal gaps in eaves, siding, vents, and chimney caps with fine mesh or caulk after removal.
  2. Keep water meter and irrigation box lids closed and intact.
  3. Remove old comb and clean the area thoroughly, since scent attracts new swarms.
  4. Cover outdoor food and trash during barbecues to discourage yellowjackets.

Hiring tips

Ask whether the provider does live removal, treatment, or both; whether comb removal and sealing are included; and what is guaranteed. Pest control companies that apply pesticides for hire should hold a Structural Pest Control Board license (check at pestboard.ca.gov). Live beekeeping removal may be handled by beekeepers with different credentials, so ask what applies.

Frequently asked questions

Will a bee swarm leave on its own?

Often, yes, within a day or two. Keep people and pets away and don't disturb it. If the bees start going into a wall, roof, or box, call for removal.

Can honey bees be removed alive?

Often, depending on where the colony is and how reachable it is. Ask the provider whether they relocate bees and what they do with the comb.

Why can't I just spray the hive in my wall?

Killing bees without removing the comb can leave melting honey and wax that stains walls and attracts pests and new bees. Removal and sealing is the lasting fix.

When should I call 911 for a sting?

Call 911 for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, or many stings at once, especially in children or older adults.
