Most indoor ant problems in coastal Southern California come from the Argentine ant, a small brown ant that forms huge connected colonies outdoors and sends long trails indoors looking for water and food. Ants often move inside during hot, dry spells and during heavy rain. Long-term control usually focuses on the outdoor colonies and on baits that workers carry back, rather than spraying the trails you see inside.

Why do ants keep coming inside?

  • Weather: heat waves drive ants toward water; heavy rain floods nests and pushes them indoors.
  • Food: sweets, grease, pet food, and crumbs, as well as honeydew from aphids and scale insects on landscape plants.
  • Water: kitchens and bathrooms, especially around leaks.
  • Easy routes: gaps around windows, doors, outlets, and plumbing, and plants touching the house.

Which ants are common here?

  • Argentine ants: the most common nuisance ant in urban coastal California; trails of many small, uniform brown ants.
  • Odorous house ants and other small ants: similar indoor habits.
  • Carpenter ants: larger ants that nest in damp or decayed wood. They don't eat wood like termites, but they can signal a moisture problem.
  • Southern fire ants and other stinging ants: present in parts of Southern California. Red imported fire ants have been found in parts of the region, and California has worked to control them. If you see aggressive ants building mounds in turf and stinging people, report them and avoid disturbing the mound.

Why baits usually beat sprays

Spraying a trail kills the ants you see but not the queens in the nest, and some repellent sprays can split colonies and spread the problem. Slow-acting baits let worker ants carry the product back to the colony. Many pros combine baits with targeted, non-repellent treatments around the outside of the home and the main entry points. The UC Statewide IPM Program has a good overview of this approach.

What can I do today?

  1. Wipe trails with soapy water to remove the scent trail. It stops the line for a while without scattering the colony.
  2. Find where the trail enters and where it goes. That helps the pro place treatments.
  3. Store sweets and pet food in sealed containers, and clean up crumbs and sticky spills.
  4. Trim plants away from the house and control aphids on shrubs and citrus.
  5. Fix leaks under sinks and around the dishwasher.

What does a professional ant service involve?

A technician usually inspects inside and out to find trails, nests, and entry points, places baits indoors where needed, treats the outside perimeter and nest areas, and recommends sealing and landscape changes. Many homes with Argentine ants need ongoing service through the warm months, because huge outdoor colonies can keep reinvading. Ask whether a one-time service or a recurring plan fits your situation, and how often visits happen.

When is it more than a nuisance?

Ants in electrical boxes, irrigation controllers, or appliances can cause shorts, and large numbers of ants in a bedroom or around a person who can't move away easily, such as an infant or a bedridden adult, deserve quick attention. Ants nesting inside walls or in damp wood can also point to a hidden leak. If ants keep showing up in one spot near plumbing, ask a plumber to check for a leak along with the pest treatment.

Kids, pets, and gardens

Tell the company about children, pets, fish ponds, bees, edible gardens, and anyone with sensitivities. Ask which products will be used, where, and when it is safe to let kids and pets back into treated areas. Labels and the company's written notice should answer this.

Hiring tips

  • Check the company's license at pestboard.ca.gov.
  • Ask what is included in a service plan and how to cancel it.
  • Ask what happens if ants come back between visits.

Frequently asked questions

Why are ants worse when it is hot or raining?

Heat sends ants looking for water, and heavy rain floods their nests. Both push them indoors. That is why ant calls often spike during heat waves and storms.

Should I spray ant trails with bug spray?

It kills the ants you see but not the colony, and some sprays scatter colonies. Wiping trails with soapy water and using baits works better for most homes.

Do carpenter ants mean I have rotten wood?

Often. Carpenter ants prefer damp or decayed wood. Finding the moisture source is part of the fix.
